Abstract

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the issue of recruitment and development of referees in Czech handball. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the current state of new referee recruitment, map their development opportunities, and identify the key factors that influence their motivation, retention, and career advancement. The thesis draws on theoretical knowledge of the sports environment, methodologies of the Czech Handball Federation, and especially on practical sources including interviews with a top-level referee and an extensive questionnaire survey completed by 131 active referees. The research methods used were a qualitative interview, a quantitative questionnaire, and a SWOT analysis. The interview provided deeper insight into personal motivation, challenges, and the support system for referees at the elite level. The questionnaire revealed the main reasons for entering officiating, the initial obstacles, attitudes toward the education system, and referees’ expectations regarding their future involvement. The SWOT analysis outlines the strengths and weaknesses of young referees, as well as the opportunities and threats that influence their development. The findings show that the most common motivations include personal initiative, the desire to stay involved in handball after a playing career, and interest in personal growth. The greatest obstacles perceived by referees are fear of criticism, a lack of respect from others, and difficulties in coordination with a referee partner. The thesis also proposes concrete measures to improve the system of recruitment and development of referees, including the strengthening of the mentoring system, increased promotion on social media, and better organizational support from regional referee committees.
