Abstract

This dissertation work deals with the possibility of balancing the concentration fluctuations of NOx by adsorption on selected types of sorbents. The main objective was to experimentally determine the minimum residence time of gas in the adsorber needed for balancing the selected input fluctuations of NO concentrations. Based on the experience from the patent, the estimation of basic criteria for the adsorption column and proposed parameters were realized. The laboratory model was assembled to study the balancing of NOx emissions, further the determination of required time delays for different NO concentration fluctuations in the mixture mainly with nitrogen was proceeded. Technical air was used only in experiments leading to sorption capacities obtained for selected types of activated carbon. Based on the experience of the patent, basic criteria of adsorption column and proposed parameters were estimated. Model laboratory apparatus was compiled to study the balancing of NOx emissions then it was debugged and required residence times for different concentration fluctuations of NO in a mixture particularly with nitrogen were determined. Technical air was used only in experiments leading to a sorption capacity for selected type of activated carbon. The obtained equilibrium adsorption data of NO in a mixture with nitrogen will be used further in the mathematical model of dynamic adsorption, which simplifies the design parameters of adsorbers for balancing the concentration fluctuations. The attention was also focused on the possibility to determine the fundamental theoretical relations describing the adsorption process and the derivation of relations between key process parameters. An important role in the adsorption process has the operational life of sorbent, therefore the research also focused on this parameter. For this reason, the methodology of long&term sorption properties of adsorbents used in laboratory experiments was set up. The sorption capacities of sorbents and their effectiveness were evaluated including the monitoring of the operational life of adsorbents in terms of changes in their physical, physico&chemical, chemical and mechanical properties during their usage.
