Abstract

The progress in light-emitting diodes (and also semiconductors in general) made it possible to face them in a growing extent of applications. Not a long time ago “LED” expression meant a small component with low-intensity red light, which was used as an indicator in electronic devices. However, only a few decades were enough to develop models with wavelengths covering the whole visible range, including infra-red and ultra-violet areas. Modifications such as laser diodes and power LEDs are also common. Each type has its characteristic properties and usage. Traditional LEDs are still used as indicators or in remote control units of home electronic devices (infrared wavelength) etc., while laser diodes are deployed in high-speed data transmissions. The primary purpose of power LEDs is lighting. The question is, whether it is possible to raise their value by adding the ability to transmit data. The increase in costs wouldn’t be radical, as the diodes and their basic driving circuits are already implemented. Datasheets don’t mention anything like this, therefore this work was written.
