Abstract
DROZD, L.: Residential and social center on the Academic square in Brno: Diploma thesis. Ostrava: VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Civil Engineering, department of Architecture, 2015, Thesis advisor: Hrůša, P.
the theme of this diploma thesis is to think about the future of a ill used urban space of the Academic square in Brno. This urban space is defined by four main axie. By three streets - from the northwest by Šumavská street, from southwest by Veveří street, serving as the main supply route, and from southeast by Hrnčířská street. And an existing urban structure - three highrise administrative buidings and the building of the Law faculty from the northeast. In it’s near vicinity we can find a lot of important buildings, mostly educational (like the buildings of VUT or the University of Defense), which make this area a very important one. One of the many reasons that influenced my thoght process was the proposed underground tram line connecting the North and South parts of the city. This line is supposed to go along the east side of this area with a proposed station right in the middle. Due to it’s size and it’s today’s purpouse (a parking lot) the area is difficult to grasp. It’s a boder space. Like a lonely island in the middle of the sea of urban structure, that isn’t offering anything of quality to the cititzens. It is crucial to divide this space into smaller subspaces, that can be easily defined. I also would like to give this space back to the people. transform it into a livable space, where people would like to be instead of just passing through. Because what makes a city a city? PEOPLE. That is why I see as the most appropriate to try to create here a new Residential and social center.
