Abstract
Ostrava is one of the regions where environment is heavily affected by the dust and gaseous emissions. Recent research has shown that the main contributing factors are the growth of the automobile traffic and related emissions of harmful substances produced by the exhaust gases.
One of the options how to improve the environmental situation in Ostrava is to substitute conventional fossil fuels (petrol, diesel, natural gas) with the alternative types of fuel. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, there was a number of negotiations on the level of the Deputy Governor of the Moravskoslezský Region (MSK) at the department of transport, environment and development, in partnership with The Agency for Development of MSK. The authorities had been in favour of the use of hydrogen as the alternative fuel for the public transport and the shuttle service between Ostrava and the airport of Leoš Janáček in Mošnov. The VŠB-TUO, the Faculties of Safety Engineering and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and members of the HYDROGEN-CZ o.s. cluster were supposed to participate in the preparatory stage of „The Hydrogen Filling Station Project“ and its implementation as well. The project was submitted based on the appeal of MSK in the research and devleopment area, however, it was not selected for implementation at that stage. A part of the project was the operational, technological and service safety of the station as it was expected to be used also for the commercial purposes. There was no related experience available in the Czech Republic in that period. There is, of course, a number of companies that carry out the hydrogen filling stations in the world, such as LINDE-GAS, a AIR LIQUID or AIR PRODUCT. However, this filling station was supposed to be designed by the research team of VŠB-TUO.
