Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to explain the principles of accountability and the role of mayor in public administration. Start of work defines basic concepts of this topic. The work looks into the history of Czech government., which dates back to mid of the 19th century. There are also described the tasks that the mayor performs not only in the established law of the village, but also the obligations which it imposes special laws. The mayor may act at different stages, as an employer or may occure in the field of environmental protection, crisis management and defense planning, social care or other sections of the state administration. The work also will learn the current topic, which are direct elections, not only in the Czech Republic. Mention is also about direct elections in the Slovak Republic and Poland, where this option has been running for several years. Using the survey found, how many percentage of respondents is for direct election and what not. The questionnaire also addressed the question of how the mayor should ideally look like and what people expect from him.
