The aim of this paper is a detailed familiarization with function and control structure of the simple cruise control without adaptation, description of the construction, complex structure as well as management of the adaptive cruise control. This piece of work also presents description of various sensors which are necessary for the adaptive cruise control, their physical principles as well as additional sensors important for completion of the whole system. The practical part focuses on the measurement of two different adaptive cruise controls and evaluation of their various functions. A partial result of this work is the finding that all analyzed types of controllers can not be activated in the presence of the error codes within the engine control unit.
