Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) belong to the group of persistent organic polutants. These compounds are considered to be one of the most serious environmental contaminants. They tend to accumulate in bodies of living organisms and in environment owing to their lipophylic property and high stability. Some of them have toxic or cancerogenic effect. My thesis aims at bringing a characteristics of PAHs and PCBs properties and their main pathways of biodegradation description. The main part of the thesis contains an overview of research results in bioremediation technologies and laboatory experiments using biodegradative potential of different bacterial, fungal and plant strains.
