Abstract

This bachelor’s thesis addresses the issue of fire safety on ships, which represents a critical aspect of safety in water transport given the specific conditions of evacuation and the limited possibilities for intervention within the confined environment of a vessel. The main objective of the thesis is to conduct a comprehensive review of information sources and legislative requirements regarding the fire safety characteristics of materials used in the construction and outfitting of vessels to ensure their fire safety. The introductory section focuses on the basic classification of water transport and the categorization of ships, which provides the necessary framework for the subsequent analysis of safety standards. The core of the thesis focuses on the concept of fire safety and a detailed analysis of the requirements placed on materials in terms of their flammability, toxicity of combustion products, and fire resistance of structures. The text analyzes key international documents, particularly the SOLAS Convention and the FTP Code, and compares them with European standards (ES-TRIN) and Czech technical standards (ČSN). The thesis also addresses current challenges in the field of fire protection, such as the specifics of transporting electric vehicles and the use of alternative fuels. The result of this work is a comprehensive synthesis of knowledge regarding material requirements for individual categories of vessels. An evaluation of the findings provides an overview of the current state of legislation and technical standards that define the parameters of passive fire protection in both maritime and inland navigation.
