Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the influence of religion on economic status of women in developing countries, i.e. in countries with medium and low levels of HDI. The issue is examined by comparing the indicators in three religious groups: Christianity, Islam, and other religions (Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, tribal religions). An overview essay is included as well. The indicators were carefully selected to show the involvement of women in the labour market, in society, education and health care. The comparison is based on data mainly from the World Bank and the World Economic Forum, UNESCO etc. The comparison shows that women in selected Christian countries are the most educated. Regarding employment best placed were Christian countries and group of other religions (followed by Asian and African ones). The health of women is prosperous in other religions examined. In all areas surveyed, the position of Islamic women is the worst.
