Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a search studies on the nature and process of creation, resources, environmental impacts and possibilities of treatment of acid mine water (Acid mine drainage - AMD). For this purpose, a large number of literatures on the subject, was studied. Contamination of the environment due to AMD release in to the water flows and groundwater, means a significant environmental risk. Mine waters quantitatively represent the most significant part of the waste generated during mining. Therefore it is extremely important to study and monitoring the AMD and finding the possibilities of mine water treatment. The experimental parts of the thesis focus on the verification of the possibility of using calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as a sorption medium capable to remove sulphates from contaminated waters. In the experiments we worked with samples of water taken from the entrance to the mine water treatment plant Vršany in north-western Bohemia, which is under the controle of the Vršanská coal mining company, a.s. The main source of inspiration for the chosen experimental procedure, was the study of authors Silva et al. 2012 titled Mine water treatment with limestone for sulfate removal. The results of our study did not confirm the good sorption properties of CaCO3, does not agree with the results of Silva et al. 2012. Calcium carbonate is thus proven to be unsuitable for the removal of SO42- ions from the studied type of mine water.
