Abstract

The objective of this thesis was to find and describe the relation between financial crises and mental health and suicide rate using a correlation analysis. Firstly a correlation between depression prevalence in the US, which represented mental health, and SP 500 index, which represented financial crises, more specifically the development of financial markets, was examined. Secondly the same method was used to find a correlation between SP 500 index and suicide rate in the US. The assumption was to find an indirect correlation between the examined data in both cases. The results show that this assumption was correct only in the case of relation between SP 500 index and suicide rate. Based on method used in this thesis it is not possible to tell whether financial crises lead to worse mental health and higher suicide rate or not. However the results proved the existence of relation between the situation on financial markets and mental health and suicide rate, although a more detailed examination is needed to provide a better explanation of this relation.
