Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most prevalent disease which is the cause of irreversible vision loss in people over 60 years. There are several methods to diagnose AMD. One of them is the FAF (Fundus autofluorescence) method exploited by the Heidelberg Engineering in their OCT (Optical coherence tomography) devices as one of the modalities. This modality, BluePeakTM, uses fluorescence of lipofuscin deposited in lysosomes of affected cells to display the extent of disease progression. The acquired image is processed with the aim to determine the area of macula struck by the disease. For this purpose, the software MATLAB with its Image Processing Toolbox can favourably be used. Using mathematical operations is possible to calculate the range of macular lession with great precision.
