Abstract

The submitted work is aimed at the identification of potential avalanche run-outs with the application of numerical models and GIT. The modelling was located into chosen mountain areas in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. During three winter seasons (2008 – 2011) the selected avalanches were documented in detail and located by precise GPS measuring. The aim was to realize sufficiently precise verification of the results gained by modelling, what is the condition for necessary calibration of the model. In the work the Swiss dynamic numerical model RAMMS was mainly used. This model enables to simulate the dynamics of geophysical motions of mass from its activation up to its run-outs in three-dimensional terrain. The data gained by measuring in terrain and also the historical data from well documented avalanches in the past were used for the calibration and verification of the model. Properly calibrated model was consequently used for the prediction of avalanche run-outs and the dynamics of potential avalanches. In this way it was possible to specify various zones of potential avalanche danger. This process enables to update an avalanche cadastre continuously, what represents the only professional basis for decision-making and planning of human activities in the mountain areas of Slovakia nowadays. The main aims of this work have significant application character with the focus on operational practice in avalanche prevention in Slovakia. It was possible to achieve these aims especially because of the close cooperation with the Center for Avalanche Prevention, Mountain Rescue Service in Jasná, what is the only guarantee of avalanche prevention in the mountain areas of Slovakia.
