Abstract
Fracture of the sacrum and sacroiliac joint poses a risk to the ability of the pelvis to maintain upper body stability. The standard treatment procedure is the insertion of a guidewire followed by a cannulated screw under an X-ray imaging system. Part of the surgical procedure is preoperative planning of the position of the guidewire and the screw. The preoperative plan is during the surgical procedure integrated with a navigation system to ensure correct placement of the fixation tools, thus forming a computer system for assisted orthopedic surgery. This thesis proposes a software system for computer assisted orthopedic surgery using 2D-2D image registration of projections of digitally reconstructed radiographs, where an image simulating an intraoperative X-ray before the procedure is registered to an image of a preoperatively planned position of a guidewire. The software system is developed with a graphical user interface, which allows the creation and registration of these projections. The guidewire is then displayed by superimposition of its location relative to the intraoperative X-ray image.
