Abstract

Polymers are nowadays commonly available material that is degradated very heavily. If the plastic waste is not sorted properly, it is deposited on waste sites. This essay disserts on biopolymers called polyhydroxyalkanoates, which are produced in bacteria. The particular chapters describe the history of biopolymers, their classification, properties, biosynthesis pathway, isolation, biodegradation and also the economical aspects of their use. This paper summarizes positives and negatives of each method as well as the characteristics of the individual biopolymers and suggests the possibilities of use in various branches of industry. In the last chapter some alternative and quite cheap methods, especially production biopolymers in transgenic plants are described. These could be used in future to produce large amount of bioplastics.
