Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to determine, whether there is a correlation between the development of currency and the development of payment cards and estimate whether the selected countries are close to a cashless society. The sample is formed by five European countries, that are members of the European Union but not members of the Euro area and they have the separate and independent central bank. The first theoretical chapter is devoted to the approaches of supply and money demand. The second part deals with development of payment instruments from the earliest forms to present-day cashless forms of payments. The subject of the last chapter is an analysis of the cash and non-cash forms of payment, where the method of comparison is used and the expected relationship is verified by regression analysis.
