Abstract

The study of microstructure was performed on twin-roll-casted AW-3003 alloy that is used as heat exchangers in automotive industry. The different defects are commonly found in the alloy microstructure which two of them, cross-stripped microstructure and central segregation were investigated. Obtained input data led to necessity of separation force measurement and phase analysis of sheet microstructure. Results of metallographic study of matrix and eutectics showed that Fe segregates in intermetallic phases and other alloying elements like Mn, Si and Zn segregate in to the eutectics with lower amount dissolved in solid solution. Based on the separation forces measurement it was found that zones are free-defect in conditions of higher loading of rolls. The values of separation forces will be used in building up of defect limit diagram that enables to optimalise the twin roll casting parameters and obtain defect free structure.
