Abstract

This diploma deals with study of solidification conditions of continuous casting round steel billets with diameter 400 mm using numerical modelling in ProCAST simulation software. The aim of numerical modelling realized under the conditions of the Department of Metallurgy and Foundry and Regional Materials Science and Technology Centre (RMSTC) at VSB-TU Ostrava is the optimization of the production of continuously cast steel in ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. Theoretical part is focused on fundamentals of continuous casting of steel. Theoretical knowledge are supplemented with analysis of actual global literature in field of continuous casting of round steel billets. With the aim of higher productivity of continuous casting machine while complying quality parameters, possibilities of verification and production optimization are also mentioned. In practical part, the current state of topic is represented, fundamentals of experimental study using numerical modelling in commercial simulation software are described. Current reach input data for relevant settings of numerical model and both necessary for verification of technology of continuous casting of large round steel billets on the modernized continuous casting machine in ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. are summarized. The determination of thermodynamic properties of materials and the conditions of heat transfer in the continuously cast billet primary and secondary cooling zone, which provides information on temperature field, metallurgical length, solidifying shell thickness in the end of mold and porosity depending on boundary conditions of casting, are also discussed.
