The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the social, economic and environmental areas for tourism development in Slovakia and then focus on the Žilina Region and Kysuce, where a significant potential for rural tourism development.

The first chapter deals with general theoretical and methodological approaches for regional development and regional policy. The next section focuses on the detailed examination of the conditions determining the development of tourism in Slovakia, Žilina Region and in selected municipalitie. The last chapter has offered to draft project creation of agro-tourism facilities in the examined region. It is possible to evaluate that the interest of the public about products in agrotourism business is growing, which makes the growing number of businesses in this sector.
