Abstract

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the function of WDM technologies and show how to use these technologies in passive optical networks and then create a simulation of this network and compare the results from this simulation with those from practical measurements. This thesis is divided into four main parts. In the first part I describe the existing passive optical access networks and basic functional components that are used in these networks. In the second chapter I describe the new technology called WDM and the new components used for the proper function of this technology, such as an AWG, tunable lasers, optical sources and detectors. I also describe the new topologies with WDM technology. The third chapter deals with the simulations in the Optiwave Optisystem where I simulate WDM network and I describe the components used and their settings. In the last chapter I compare the results from simulations with practical measurements. I also assess whether the simulation has any benefits and if the results are so accurate that they can be considered final.
