Abstract

This thesis is focused on methods of natural ways of wastewater treatment using wetlands. The wetlands have been intensively studied in the Czech Republic for more than 30 years. The first full-scale constructed wetland for wastewater treatment was built in Czech Republic in 1989. The majority of the systems is horizontal subsurface flow and is designed for the secondary treatment of domestic or municipal wastewater. All Czech wetlands designed as subsurface flow systems. The systems with horizontal subsurface flow usually provide high treatment effect in terms of removal of organics (BOD5, COD) and suspended solids (SS). The construction cost equals that for conventional treatment systems but the operation and maintenance costs are much lower. Wetlands for wastewater treatment are suitable for systems treat wastewater from combined sewerage, together with storm water runoff.
