Abstract

This diploma thesis focuses on assessing the economic efficiency of an investment in a small containerized battery energy storage system. The primary motivation for the research is the ongoing energy transformation and the increasing share of renewable energy sources, which heighten electricity price volatility and create opportunities for market arbitrage. An econometric analysis is conducted to identify variables influencing the intraday price spread. Based on the regression model results, three scenarios for future market development are defined, serving as direct inputs for the subsequent financial model. The assessment of investment feasibility is performed using the two-stage Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method, incorporating Net Present Value (NPV) and Profitability Index indicators. The results of the analysis suggest that in the most likely scenario, the considered investment is not profitable when accounting for current capital costs and the technical limitations of the system.
