Abstract

ABSTRACT: Al-Si alloys account for the biggest percentage casted pieces in the world, and the automotive industry is the one of the major consumers of these alloys. In this diploma thesis the theoretical part describes the more common parameters that need to be considered for the selection of the right alloy, the proper casting technology and the possible defects. The experimental part complements this work with metallography analysis of three different specimens of casted Al alloys, from the 4xx family and the 3xx family with and without heat treatment. Also, metallography results are given for three different Al profiles subjected to different working conditions. The mechanical properties of the casted alloys are evaluated with microhardness. The viability of Al-Si alloys with different elements to be used for the automotive industry is fully demonstrated in this diploma thesis.
