Abstract

The bachelor’s thesis focuses on safe patient handling in healthcare facilities. The first part of the thesis evaluates the current level of physical strain in health care workers. It also deals with the legislation related to safety and protection of health when working under physical strain. A special chapter is dedicated to musculoskeletal disorders which develop as a result of incorrect manipulation of heavy objects. The thesis also describes the correct practices and key rules for patient handling, including examples of patient handling that health care workers deal with in their everyday nursing care practice. The final part of the thesis analyses an internal guideline on handling heavy objects and presents the results of a questionnaire survey on the current situation related to patient handling in a healthcare facility. As a result, the author of the thesis recommends measures to decrease risks connected with patient handling in a selected healthcare facility.
