Abstract
This bachelor’s thesis analyzes the profitability of investing in cryptocurrencies and compares them with traditional investment assets. The theoretical section defines the main principles of investing, describes the technological and economic background of selected cryptocurrencies, and establishes the evaluation methodology. The practical section focuses on a comparative analysis of historical market data over nine-year and five-year time horizons. The analyzed sample consists of leading cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana), stock indices (S&P 500, MSCI World, Nasdaq 100), and investment-grade gold. To assess investment potential, statistical metrics such as total and geometric returns, standard deviation, Sharpe and Sortino ratios, and mutual correlation were applied. The results demonstrate that although cryptocurrencies exhibit high volatility, calculations of the Sharpe and Sortino ratios confirmed that historical growth has compensated investors for the risk they assumed. The conclusion of the study is a recommendation that investments in digital assets are suitable primarily as a dynamic portfolio diversification strategy for investors with a long-term horizon.
