Abstract
This thesis solves the influence of pollutants on respiration inhibition of microorganisms in activated sludge. The influence was tested on two kinds of activated sludge from waste water treatment plants of company OVAK, a.s. Activated sludge from WWTP Ostrava Přívoz is influenced by industrial waste water inflow, WWTP Heřmanice II treats municipal waste water only. Respiration inhibition was measured by means of Strathox unit (Strathkelvin Instruments Ltd.). Research was focused on monitoring of influence of different concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni and organic pollutants (phenol, surfactants) on respiration inhibition. Thirty percent inhibition was established for concentration of Cr (5 mg/l), Cu (180 mg/l), Cd (245 mg/l) and Ni (382 mg/l) in activated sludge from WWTP Ostrava Přívoz. For activated sludge from WWTP Heřmanice II the inhibiting concentration were lower in comparison with WWTP Ostrava-Přívoz: Ni (110 mg/l), Cd (123 mg/l), Cu (140 mg/l) except for Cr, where was the thirty percent inhibition higher (35 mg/l). Respiration inhibition caused by heavy metals starts up in range of several mg/l units, which is concentration too high compared with those metals in inflows to WWTPs. It was proved in this thesis that microorganisms in activated sludge have different sensitivity determined by measuring the respiration inhibition. Activated sludge from WWTP Ostrava Přívoz is less sensitive for higher concentrations of pollutants. The most obvious difference is for phenol – activated sludge from WWTP Heřmanice II indicated the respiration inhibition for 1000 times less concentration then activated sludge from WWTP Ostrava Přívoz, which is influenced by phenol – ammonia waste water inflow.
