Vysoká škola báňská – Technická univerzita Ostrava, Fakulta bezpečnostního inženýrství, Katedra bezpečnostního managementu. This dissertation focuses on the issues of pollutant mixing in surface water from a point source i.e. from the point of discharge/leakage up to the place in the river where pollutant concentration is continuous throughout the whole cross-section of the flow. Experimentally, the scope of mixing zone on various types of watercourses in the Czech Republic had been verified using an appropriate method and then compared with calculation procedures of authors having dealt with such issues. The Czech Pollution Test was used made to predict the zone where environmental quality standards are exceeded and the zone of potential acute and chronic effects in aquatic organisms based on incident scenarios of harmful substance spills into a watercourse. The main outcome of this thesis is a methodological approach taken to define mixing zones in the water environment of the Czech Republic. Knowledge obtained and outcomes of this thesis are useful as a tool for management decision making in the case of the hazardous substances releases into the surface water.
