Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to create a program to calculate strains and stresses on arcs. The program should use plane triangular finite elements. The structure would be either a circular or a parabolic arc. Arcs geometry can be defined by a cross-section, a span, a height, a radius and by a finite element division of height of the cross-section. The thesis includes history and development of finite element method. The derivation of a triangle finite element for plane problem is included. This element is used in the developed program code which also incorporates the Newton-Raphson method. The program includes a nonlinear (elastic-plastic) material model.
