Abstract
Catalysis is an integral part of petrochemical processes. Catalysts, used for deep purification of steam cracker units’ products typical impurities, are different types from catalytic beds to remove hydrogen sulfide – catalyst with zinc (Zn) content, acetylene catalyst with palladium (Pd) content, carbon monoxide and oxygen - catalyst with copper (Cu) content to active alumina or molecular sieves - zeolites to remove carbon dioxide. Deep cleaning is necessary to reduce the concentration of impurities to 1-5 ppmV for subsequent polymerization units, especially gas phase polymerization of ethylene. The use of a palladium catalyst is primarily determined for the hydrogenation of acetylene on both the steam cracker units’ reactors and the polyolefins units’ reactors. Recycling of palladium from the used catalyst has an economic benefit in particular. Recycled palladium can be sold to catalytic manufacturers and financially saved when buying new catalysts.
