Abstract

A steel production has a long history. But until the start of operation of continuous casting of steel, as a complex but powerful tool for continuous casting of steel billets, a tendency began to use the latest knowledge from science and research field to maintain the quality and competitiveness of the steel giants during the development of new and upgrading existing plants with continuous casting machines. This work devotes to clarifying of the basic principles of continuous casting of steel with a focus on the analysis of currently available world literature from the perspective of the temperature field modelling of continuously cast steel billets with regard to the formation of surface and subsurface cracks or defects, and then the area of optimization of primary, secondary and tertiary cooling. It also outlines the progress towards the use of numerical models and simulations to optimize the continuous casting and the tendency to link these models to on-line use direct in operating conditions.
