Abstract

This diploma thesis deals with the problems of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC), focusing on evaluation of Ostrava. Initiative ECOC represents one of the most successful projects of the European Union in the field of culture. This thesis describes the history of the project and the selection process and criteria. Other parts are targeted at specific analysis of the candidacy of Ostrava - Ostrava 2015th. Comparisons with other ECOC are found reasons of failure city of Ostrava in competition with Pilsen. The final chapter focuses almost, to assess options for the planned projects. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that the process of candidacy has a positive impact on the development of the city.
