Abstract

JAHODOVÁ, Helena. Urbanism, emotional city map and the occurrence of crime. Ostrava, 2026. Bachelor's thesis. VŠB-TUO, Faculty of Safety Engineering. This bachelor thesis examines the influence of urbanism on the perception of safety and the occurrence of socially pathological phenomena in the urban environment. The main objective of the thesis is to clarify how the physical form of a city shapes the subjective feelings of its inhabitants and to demonstrate the use of emotional maps as a tool for understanding their relationship with public space. The theoretical part analyzes criminological concepts ranging from the Chicago School to the Broken Windows Theory, with an emphasis on the role of emotions and the social construction of reality. The practical part focuses on the town of Bruntal, where quantitative research and emotional mapping were used to examine the localization of emotions, attitudes, and safety perceptions among various groups of inhabitants. The results of the thesis identify not only problematic areas but also the importance of the quality of public spaces for the overall well-being of citizens. The findings can serve as a relevant basis for building a safer and more inclusive urban space.
