Abstract

Abstract This BSc Thesis summarizes processes and procedures used to determine precious metal contents of alloys by chemical analysis and by non-destructive testing –X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and the touchstone testing method. Precious metal fineness determination is an important type of service, provided by the government through the Assay Office especially as a consumer protection measure in jewellery – an area which is difficult to inspect. The history and current status of use of precious metals are outlined and the specific properties of precious metals are described. The core of the thesis is in a summary of methods serving to determine the fineness of alloys in objects covered by the hallmarking legislation (Hallmark Act). In the final part, the thesis describes promising directions in this area combining materials science/testing with practical precious metal assaying services aimed to providing consumer protection.
