Abstract

According to the rising energy consumption and decreasing storage of fossil fuels, it is necessary to seek for new ways of energy generation. One of the possibilities that solves these problems certainly is an energy generation from wind energy. VŠB - TU Ostrava has also decided to make its contribution and support research and development of a small wind energy generation. In the first phase, a prototype of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) was simulated with numerical methods and consequently built. In this bachelor thesis a design of measuring apparatus and sole measurements in a wind tunnel and in a real environment are proposed in order to obtain a power characteristics of the VAWT built. The measuring apparatus is therefore assembled from a tachogenerator as a rotation sensor and from a magnetic powder brake, which includes a static torque measuring sensor. The power output is thus derived from the values of rotation and torque. Both measurings in the wind tunnel and in the real environment are described in detail and the results obtained are presented. At the end, a final assessment of the work done is presented along with some suggestions for further research and development. From the results obtained, it was found that in order to increase the overall power output, the VAWT investigated should have greater dimensions in the further progress.
