Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to study the biosorption of hexavalent chromium in a fixed bed column. English walnut (Juglans regia) wood chips are investigated as a promising low-cost adsorbent. The chemical treatment was performed using 1.0 M HCl for 30 min and the biosorption was studied using synthetic solution with concentration of Cr (VI) 100 mg l-1 and the value of pH = 1.1. The concentration of Cr (VI) in effluent was determined spectrophotometrically using 1,5 diphenyl carbazide. The bed height of 10 cm and flow rate of 20 ml min-1 were chosen as optimum. Biosorption efficiency in time of bed saturation reached 82.34 %. Uptake capacity was 69.37 mg g-1. Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and BDST model have been applied to the data obtained in the experiment. The data fitted well to the BDST model with correlation coefficient equal to 0.9913. The results were discussed with conclusions of existing studies.
