Abstract

This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of Estonia and its membership in European Union. Aim of this paper is to evaluate position of Estonia in the European Union, its development and benefits which come from the membership, based on selected socioeconomic aspects. The research question answered by this paper is: Is Estonia’s membership in European Union beneficial? Diploma Thesis uses description, analysis, synthesis and comparison methods . Information and data used to write this paper, come from professional publications, electronic documents and official internet sources mostly in foreign languages. The third chapter of the diploma thesis evaluates the position of Estonia in the EU progress and benefits of its membership. It states that even though Estonia is one of the smallest countries in the Union it is seen as an important partner by other EU countries. Estonia’s membership in the EU opened new options to its citizens as well as to the state, which is, though small, highly efficient and profits form the participation on the Common Market. The decisions made by Estonians after gaining independence form Soviet union in early 1990’s, to implement IT technologies form an early start into the governmental services and education, brought its effects and is a reason for Estonia’s higher competitiveness and higher effectivity on European and Global scale. Thanks to membership in the EU Estonia can expand its options as an economy based on modern technologies and export. To cherish independence and ensure security Estonia joined NATO as well as EU. The answer to the research paper question was positive in the meaning that the membership of Estonia in the EU is for its benefit.
