Abstract
This diploma thesis addresses the repair proposal for the historic flax drying house
in Josefovice, part of the municipality of Hrabyně, with the aim of stabilising and conserving
its heritage value while preparing the building for future geotourism use. The object
represents a regionally significant example of small-scale rural technical heritage associated
with the drying of flax and hemp. Its value lies primarily in the legibility of its technological
function, preserved in the spatial layout, structural system, material composition, and
surviving traces of operation.
The thesis is based on an integrated approach combining the analysis of natural
conditions at the site, building-historical evaluation, archival and cartographic research,
structural assessment, material analysis of the masonry, and interpretation of technological
relics. A key part of the research consists of dendrochronological dating, which provides a
more precise chronological framework for selected timber elements and helps distinguish
individual construction phases. Additional importance is attached to the identification of
remains of the original heating installation, which strengthens the interpretive value of the
building as a document of historical production technology.
Based on the synthesis of these findings, the thesis formulates a phased repair
proposal focused on eliminating the main causes of deterioration, especially roof failure and
inadequate rainwater drainage, followed by the conservation of masonry and architectural
details using materially compatible methods. The work also considers the protection of the
building as cultural heritage, its position within the brownfield framework, and possible
forms of future use, including conservation with occasional public access and its integration
into a wider geotourism concept. The outputs are conceived as practically applicable
documentation for the real restoration, interpretation, and long-term sustainable
management of the object.
