Abstract

The main aim of this study was determination of S, As, Se, Cl and Br in bottom ash (BA) and fly ash from three sections of particulate control device (FA S1, FA S2 and FA S3) and evaluation of possible mutual relationships in particle-size fractions with the view of potential retention of these elements at coal combustion power station. Measured data revealed significant relationship between S and CaO in both BA and FA (from all three sections) – the correlation coefficients were 0.996, 0.817, 0.903 and 0.815. As far as behaviour of As, Se, Cl and Br is concerned, significant association to CaO was observed in BA, whereas in FA (namely in the first section), the significant affinity to Fe-bearing minerals was revealed (correlation coefficients were 0.686, 0.866, 0.841 and 0.785). The presented results document that not only CaO but also Fe-bearing minerals can considerably enhance the retention of these elements, which is important observation namely in terms of effective decreasing the emissions of these elements from coal combustion power stations.
