Abstract

This thesis evaluates the effects of sludge produced during chemical water treatment on the growth of fast-growing woody plants and assesses its potential application in phytoremediation processes. The main objective of the research was to experimentally verify whether such sludge can be used as a component of a cultivation substrate while simultaneously monitoring its impact on plant growth parameters and selected chemical properties of the environment. In the experiment, selected species of fast-growing woody plants were cultivated in substrates containing different proportions of sludge from a chemical water treatment plant. During the growing season, growth indicators were regularly monitored, particularly plant height, stem diameter, and biomass, while analyses of both the substrate and plant material were conducted to determine the content of selected elements and substances. The results demonstrated that the presence of sludge in the substrate can significantly influence plant growth depending on its concentration and chemical composition. The aim of the thesis is to support the use of waste products as secondary resources in land reclamation and environmental applications. The thesis contributes to the assessment of possibilities for the material utilization of water treatment sludge and expands current knowledge about its interaction with plant organisms in the context of sustainable waste management.
