Abstract

Centrifugal pump converts the input power to kinetic energy in the liquid by accelerating the liquid by revolving impeller. The most common type is the volute pump. The performance of a centrifugal pump can be shown graphically on a characteristic curve. A typical characteristic curve shows the total dynamic head plotted over the capacity range of the pump. Most often, the characteristic curve is obtained by measurement. In the process of pump design, numerical modeling can be applied to investigate the flow in a complex geometry of a centrifugal pump and to predict the achievable head and capacity. Based on the obtained results, further modifications of the impeller and volute geometry can be designed
