Abstract

Ceramics presents very wide range range of materials which are different by their chemical composition, structure and properties. These materials can be defined as a predominantly crystalline material consisting of inorganic compounds non-metallic character. Ceramic materials are largely given by properties of natural raw materials. Technical ceramics are prepared especially from synthetics raw materials. Properties require to keep exact and unchanging composition. For ceramics materials we characterize heterogeneous, polycrystalline and polyphase structure. We monitor type, morphology and properties of individual phases. Ceramics often includes glass phase and pores, i.e. separate phase with specific chemical and physical and mechanical properties. From macroscopic aspect, ceramics is homogeneous isotropic material. The main object of this bachelors thesis is distribution of selecting ceramics materials, characteristics of basic properties of ceramics materials, the most common types and structural characteristics of structural ceramics, in the following evaluation of properties of cutting ceramics materials and determination of fracture toughness for cutting ceramics beta-Si3N4 at different levels of loading force.
