Abstract

This bachelor thesis will introduce topic of optical fibers and possibilities of connecting optical fibers to the reader. Optical fibers are still developing and their properties are modifing to achieve better transmission characteristics. Optical fibers are more often used in field of telecommunications thanks to lower attenuation and higher transmission speeds. They are replacing metalic cabels gradually because they are resisting to electromagnetic interference and unable to overhear. First part deals about standard optical fiber, way of propagation of light, its properties and types. Second part deals with microstructural fiber, princip of traveling light through microstructural fiber, structure and types of microstrutural fiber. Third part describes possible losses which could appear during traveling light through fiber. Last teoretical part pays attention to possibilities of connecting fibers. Fifth part is experimental verification of connecting possibilities and measurements of connections attenuation and spectral characteristics. Whole thesis is finished by closure which includes results and knowledge gained during individual measurements.
