Abstract

This work deals with the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and its effects on the optical signal distribution in optical fibers. At the beginning of the work the term dispersion in optical fibers itself is described and, with particular focus on the polarization mode dispersion. Next, the causes of the polarization modes of dispersion, its effects on the transmitted signal and the possibilities its suppression are described. The following sections describe the options of PMD measurements. The last part is devoted to the practical measuring of PMD in optical fibers, the evaluation of the measurement results and their comparison with the standards.
