Abstract

Regional disparities, which can be observed in every country negatively affect the development of territory and standard of living of citizens. Therefore the goal of states as well as the European Union (EU) is to reduce these disparities. The bachelor thesis deals with the problem of regional disparities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The aim of thesis is to outline the issue of regional disparities in the theoretical approach and analyse, compare and evaluate the disparities in the regions NUTS 2 in the period 2000 – 2008. On the basis of comparison of NUTS 2 regions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the existence of regional disparities was confirmed. Improving the values of selected indicators of regional disparities in relation to the EU-27 suggests a degree of convergence or reducing of regional disparities within the EU. There is also the reduction of disparities among regions of both countries, which demonstrates the importance and effectiveness of cooperation within EU economic and social cohesion.
