Abstract

This thesis aims to verify the applicability of x-ray fluorescent spectrometry method for measuring heavy metals in a steel matrix as a follow up to the Parliament and Council directive 2011/65/EU. The theoretical part deals with the content and goals of the quoted directive and characteristics of metals damaging environment. It describes principals of measuring chosen metals while using optical emission spectrometry and x-ray fluorescent spectrometry. The practical part is concentrated on the construction and verification of calibration curves for determination of mercury and cadmium using an x-ray fluorescent spectrometer. Both elements were calibrated by usage of pure chemical substances dosed in different concentrations into tablets that are moulded from pure powdered iron. For the calibration of mercury HgO was used, for the calibration of Cd there was a solution of prepared by desolving spectral pure metal. An attention was paid to verification of calibration models. In case of mercury a problem of the fact that this element is influenced by the presence of lead was being solved. In the end of the thesis there was a measure of a few samples of steel, in which the volume was set by using created calibration curves.
