Abstract

In the diploma thesis there is a summary of applications of plastic light-guides in automotive industry as well as usage of LEDs to feed these light-guides. The main point of the diploma thesis is to measure the optical properties of totally seven different plastic materials usually used in production of headlamps and rearlamps for motor vehicles. The compacted knowledge base arises from the measurement of selected plastic materials including information about the light absorption inside the materials. These information are used in follow-up calculations of absorption coefficient for each measured material. Absorption coefficients are then used in the optical simulations of LED – light-guide setup (simulations done by ASAP software from Breault Research Organization) and results from these simulations are compared with the original measurement. With the implementation of absorption coefficients the precision of simulations is much more better than without the absorption coefficient. That finally means that calculated absorption coefficients can be very well used in further development of optical systems using the plastic light-guides inside the headlamps and rearlamps of motor vehicles.
