Abstract

This bachelor thesis concerns the topic of media literacy and the importance of it being an inseparable part of our lives in this age. Achieving a certain level of media literacy helps to reveal the tactics used by media and gives the individuals a chance to decide themselves, regardless the media influence. It also helps them to rise the quality of gained information, but also the value of their lives and their knowledge about the outer world. Therefore it’s necessary to have at least a basic knowledge about how media work, so the tactics behind the scene can be revealed. The thesis includes a brief history of media to help understand the way media works and communication today. Understanding the principles of creation and the spreading of information plays a crucial role in the process of realizing how media can manipulate and why. That is the main reason for ‘Introduction to Media’ lessons at school which aim to help students get a critical point of view toward the media. Part of the thesis also includes research done at two Ostrava high schools in order to find out their students’ opinion and their attitude regarding the media and media lessons at school.
