Abstract

This thesis deals with bioaccumulation of metal oxides in bryophytes. In the theoretical part, issues of nanoparticles and biomonitoring were summarized. In the experimental part, two species of bryophytes – Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi were used. These species were exposed to suspensions of ZnO nanoparticles with known concentrations for 1 to 8 weeks. In order to establish the content of zinc in bryophytes, atomic absorption spectrometry was used. The measured results were presented in the form of graphs generated in statistical programme "R". Contents of the accumulated zinc in the moss thalli fitted a linear regresion with maximum in the eighth week of exposition. The zinc content in Hylocomium splendens was 1,649 % of total weight. The zinc content in Pleurozium schreberi was 1,731 % of total weight. Statistical results showed that Hylocomium splendens has better zinc bioaccumulation capacity for zinc has, however both species have proved to have bioaccumulation properties allowing them to be used as a suitable biomonitors of ZnO nanoparticles pollution.
