Abstract

The thesis deals with the issue of building spatial data infrastructures (hereinafter referred to as SDIs) and with the possible uses of a managed architecture. To this end, it mentions the typical problems that accompany the design, implementation, and operation of an SDI, and in addition to these, it presents an overview of rel ated research made in the field of methodological support in building an SDI. The aim of the thesis has been to create a generally applicable, methodological tool in the form of an architectural framework that would support the design and implementation of an SDI. Applied during the creation of the framework were starting points that took into account methodological requirements, existing methods, current view of evaluating the outcomes of an SDI, geoinformatics standards, as well as the role of reference models in the design of the archi tecture. The designed architectural framework contains three parts reflecting the aspects of building an SDI — those related to process, information, and content respectively. The core, process part of the framework comprises a method for building an SDI arc hitecture. The method was created by applying the existing ADM (Architecture development method) approach. The information part comprises the created meta-model, which defines the informational extent for modeling an SDI architecture. The last, content part of the framework presents, in the form of the defined viewpoints, the interests that involved parties have in the output of the architecture, and it presents a set of created and external reference models in support of the design process.
